SHONALEIGH CUMBERS: DRUT’SYLA ANCIENT STORYTELLING SKIL

We proudly continue introducing this year’s performers at the 2nd  STORYing! All world known and renowned names, storytelling masters, each of them special and unique in their own way.

One of them is Shonaleigh Cumbers from Great Britain, probably the last carrier of Drut’syla, ancient storytelling skill from the Jewish tradition. Having learned the Drut’syla tradition from the age of four, once she heard her aged Jewish grandmother tell a tale that can make you believe there’s still magic, there was no going back. Storytelling is in her blood, she lived and breathed tales during her childhood because this is a skill that in Jewish culture never died. And she is continuing with the tradition.

Her repertoire consists of 12 interlinked cycles, each of them with hundreds of tales! And interestingly enough, Shonaleigh keeps all the stories in her head! None of them are written on paper.

She is a passionate advocate for the development of storytelling as a cultural and educational tool and an award winner for her great contribution to culture.

As one of Europe’s leading storytellers, she continues to perform at festivals and events around the world. Wherever she goes she carries with her thousands of oral stories from the Jewish tradition and shares their magic, mystery and wisdom. It is a great honor she will be performing some of them in Zagreb. We are looking forward to this very special and unique treat!
